6 Tips to Make Your Two-Outfit Shoot a Success

Two outfits means more moving parts than a single-outfit shoot. Here’s what we’ve learned from working with hundreds of two-outfit couples to make the day flow smoothly.

📅 Lock in your outfits 2–3 months before the shoot

Two outfits means two fittings, two rounds of alteration if needed, and two sets of accessories to coordinate. Starting this process at least 2–3 months out gives you time to adjust without pressure. Popular kimono styles — especially specific colors in the iro-uchikake collection — can get reserved quickly in peak seasons.

🕒 Build the outfit change into your timeline explicitly

A kimono change takes 20–30 minutes. A Western dress change is typically 10–15 minutes. These aren’t huge windows, but they need to be planned for. We build outfit change time into your day’s schedule — tell us if you need more buffer time between the two.

📷 Brief your photographer separately for each outfit

Each outfit calls for a different shooting style. You might want the dress shots to feel relaxed and candid, while the kimono shots should be more formal and composed. Sharing these preferences in advance — with reference photos if possible — lets the photographer shift gears intentionally rather than by default.

💧 Plan your hair and makeup for both outfits at once

The hair and makeup shift between outfits is where a lot of two-outfit shoots either gain or lose visual impact. If you go from a Western updo to a traditional Japanese hair setting, the contrast adds another layer of transformation to the album. If both looks feel similar, the outfit change loses some of its punch. Tell your hair and makeup artist you’re doing two outfits — they’ll plan accordingly.

☀ Have a weather plan for the outdoor portion

In a two-outfit plan with one outdoor session, weather becomes more consequential. We always prepare a backup indoor location option and discuss rescheduling policies upfront. If you’re traveling from abroad and your schedule is fixed, this conversation is especially important to have before your shoot day.

🌿 Take care of yourself between outfits

A two-outfit day is longer and more physically involved than a single-outfit session. Bring snacks and water. Wear comfortable shoes between shots. The outfit change is also a natural rest point — use it. The second half of your shoot will look noticeably better if you’ve given yourself a real break in the middle.
